Trees for Bonsai. (Hornbeam)

Hornbeam is a deciduous tree or tall shrub. It has smooth, gray bark. In Georgia, two species grow: Caucasian Hornbeam (Carpinus caucasica) and Jagged Hornbeam. Hornbeam is shade-tolerant, a warmth-loving plant that is not affected by frost.

Except for Bunjing (文人木), all styles of Hornbeam are used to create medium or large-sized bonsai.
Article on Bonsai Styles

Location: A sunny spot or partial shade. During summer, it is best to shield from direct midday sun. Also protect from strong winds to avoid leaf damage. No special care is needed during winter.

Watering: Moderate, the soil in the container should not dry out. During hot summer days, watering will be needed several times a day.

Fertilizer: Apply fertilizer from the end of March to September, every two weeks.

Pruning: Large branches should be pruned during the dormant period. The cut area must be covered with garden sealant. Pruning of small branches can be done throughout the year. Form-maintaining pruning is necessary throughout the growing season. Removing all leaves is possible every year, except for the season when repotting has been done.

Wire Frame: Create a wire frame on hornbeam during the winter. After wiring, constant monitoring is required. If the bark is damaged, it will take quite a long time to heal.

Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years. It tolerates strong root pruning well.

Propagation: Seeding, cutting, grafting
